Mekdelawit Mersha

Student Executive at Virtual Campus Ministry

My name is Mekdelawit Mersha. Remembering my journey since I joined Campus Ministry is one of the momentous events in my life. My sister's friend told me about Campus Ministry as a sophomore high school student. After joining campus, my friend and I were invited to the first welcoming conference for first-year students. Our senior brothers and sisters hosted us and requested we wash our feet. I refused to wash my feet but remembered Prayer Thursday (during the Passion week.) Simon Peter initially refused Jesus to wash his feet, but Jesus answered him, "If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me." Then Peter not only said yes but also asked Jesus to wash his hands and head (John 13:6-9). I then washed my feet and attended the conference. The first day of feet washing was my first impression of campus ministry, and I wondered what it is and what it does. The welcoming conference was impressive, and I dedicated my time to the weekly session. After a year, my seniors appointed me as a secretary for my batch. As an introverted person with no networking and leadership experience, I hesitated to accept the position. But I have seen an entirely different version of myself after I began serving. I never knew I loved communicating with people and that leadership was my thing. I learned to push out of my comfort zone. Meeting brothers and sisters from our batch and beyond was fascinating. Their experience taught me a lot; their unconditional love helped me love others without any expectations, and their advice shaped my spiritual path even after I moved to the US. I looked to join Campus Ministry for over a year until I saw a flyer and joined. The guidance and teaching of the Bible and the Orthodox church, which I encountered through the ministry, is always new; even after I thought I had learned it well, it has never been enough. It has been a guiding light in my life, giving me strength and wisdom as David said, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Psalms 118/119: 105)." I am honored to be part of the virtual campus ministry's first executive team and serve as the Lead. I am also delighted to be able to serve my brothers and sisters and spread the word of God using technology and social media. At first, I thought it would be impossible to provide online service as I was transitioning from an in-person service. But through time, I realized that we are even more privileged to serve online, which reminded me of the phrase from the Bible: "Redeem the time (ዘመኑን ዋጁ) (Ephesians 5:16)." VCM is an addition to building my spiritual journey. Serving was my strength when I felt like giving up and couldn't do it anymore. It is where I truly find myself and be who I am. As a leader, it sometimes feels like there are many responsibilities, but because of the support and collaboration from my brothers and sisters, it has been an enjoyable year. I have gained a lot of skills in communication, networking, leadership, time management, and, most of all, spirituality. Glory to God who chose us to be his disciples and thanks to those who introduced me to Campus Ministry and served with me. 2 Peter 1:10 says, "Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall." May God help all his children serve him until our last breath.
